Now concerning the virgins, I have no command from the Lord, but I give a judgment as one having been shown mercy by the Lord to be trustworthy.
I think then this to be good, because of the present necessity — that it is good for a man so to be.
Have you been bound to a wife? Do not seek to be loosed. Have you been loosed from a wife? Do not seek a wife.
But even if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if the virgin should marry, she has not sinned; but tribulation in the flesh such will have, and I am sparing you.
But this I say, brothers: the season has been shortened. What remains is, that even those having wives should be as not having,
and those weeping as not weeping, and those rejoicing as not rejoicing, and those buying as not possessing,
and those using the world as not using it up; for the form of this world is passing away.
But I want you to be without care. The unmarried man cares for the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord;
but the one who is married cares for the things of the world, how he may please the wife —
and he is divided. And the unmarried woman, and the virgin, cares for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit; but the one who is married cares for the things of the world, how she may please the husband.
And this I say for your own benefit, not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is becoming, and well-seated by the Lord without distraction.
But if anyone thinks that he is behaving improperly toward his virgin, if she be past her prime, and so it ought to be, let him do what he wishes — he does not sin; let them marry.
But the one who stands firm in his heart, not having necessity but having authority concerning his own will, and has decided this in his own heart, to keep his own virgin — he will do well.
So then both the one who gives his own virgin in marriage does well, and the one who does not give in marriage will do better.
A wife has been bound for as long a time as her husband lives; but if the husband should fall asleep, she is free to be married to whom she wishes — only in the Lord.
But she is more blessed if she so remains, according to my judgment; and I think also that I have the Spirit of God.
