1So put aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, [2:2] and like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation — [2:3] if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. [2:4] As you come to him, the living stone — rejected by men but chosen and precious in God's sight — [2:5] you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, into a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. [2:6] For it stands in scripture: 'Look, I am placing in Zion a chosen and precious cornerstone, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.' [2:7] So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,' [2:8] and 'a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.' They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to. [2:9] But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. [2:10] Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. [2:11] Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and resident foreigners to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. [2:12] Conduct yourselves honorably among the nations, so that, when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your honorable deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

The Living Stone and Chosen People
In the world it was spoken into
In the Greco-Roman world, the metaphor of a 'living stone' and a 'spiritual house' would resonate deeply with listeners familiar with temple construction and civic architecture. Stones were carefully chosen for their quality and purpose, and the cornerstone was essential for the stability and alignment of the entire structure. For Jewish listeners, the imagery of Zion and the cornerstone would evoke Isaiah 28:16, pointing to God’s faithfulness and the Messiah. The language of 'spiritual sacrifices' and a 'holy priesthood' draws on Israel’s temple worship, redefining it around the community of believers as a collective priesthood. The call to 'put aside malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander' reflects the ethical expectations of a community set apart in a society where honor-shame dynamics often fueled such behaviors. The term 'aliens and strangers' underscores the marginalized status of early Christians, who were often seen as outsiders in both Roman and Jewish contexts.
