ACT 13:42-52

A Light for the Gentiles

42As they were going out, they were urging them for these declarations to be spoken to them on the in-between Sabbath. [13:43] When the synagogue was dismissed, many of the Jews and of the devout converts followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking with them, were persuading them to continue in the grace of God. [13:44] On the coming Sabbath, almost the whole city was gathered together to hear the word of the Lord. [13:45] But the Jews, having seen the crowds, were filled with jealousy and were contradicting the things spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. [13:46] Having spoken boldly, Paul and Barnabas said: "To you it was necessary first for the word of God to be spoken; but since you thrust it away and do not judge yourselves worthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles — to the Gentiles. [13:47] For thus the Lord has commanded us: 'I have set you for a light of the Gentiles, to be you for salvation until the uttermost part of the earth.' [13:48] The Gentiles, hearing it, were rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. [13:49] And the word of the Lord was being carried through the whole region. [13:50] But the Jews incited the devout prominent women and the principals of the city, and they stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out from their borders — from their borders. [13:51] But they, shaking off the dust of their feet against them, went to Iconium. [13:52] And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

In the world it was spoken into

In this passage, Paul and Barnabas address a mixed audience in the synagogue at Pisidian Antioch, including Jews and (God-fearers)—Gentiles who revered the God of Israel but had not fully converted to Judaism through circumcision. The invitation to return the next Sabbath reflects the synagogue’s role as a communal gathering place for teaching and debate. The response of the Jews, filled with (zealous rivalry), highlights the tension between Jewish exclusivism and the inclusive message of the gospel. The prominence of (honorable or respected women) and leading men underscores the social dynamics of patronage and influence in Roman cities. The rejection by the Jewish leaders and the subsequent turn to the Gentiles aligns with the broader Pauline mission strategy, emphasizing the inclusion of Gentiles in God’s covenant promises. This shift would have been provocative, challenging both Jewish identity and Roman civic norms.
