ACT 20:17-38

Paulʼs Farewell to the Ephesians

17From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the assembly. [20:18] When they came to him, he said to them: "You yourselves know how I was with you the whole time from the first day I set foot in Asia — [20:19] serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that came upon me through the plots of the Jews — [20:20] how I did not hold back any of the things that were profitable, from declaring them to you and teaching you publicly and from house to house, [20:21] testifying solemnly to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. [20:22] And now, look, I am bound in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, [20:23] except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me city by city that chains and afflictions await me. [20:24] But I consider my life worth nothing to myself, as long as I finish my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus — to testify solemnly to the good news of the grace of God. [20:25] And now I know that all of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face no more. [20:26] Therefore I testify to you this very day that I am innocent of the blood of all of you. [20:27] For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. [20:28] Watch out for yourselves and for all the flock over which the Holy Spirit has set you as overseers, to shepherd the assembly of God, which He purchased with His own blood. [20:29] I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. [20:30] And from among you yourselves men will arise speaking distorted things to draw away the disciples after them. [20:31] Therefore keep watch, remembering that for three years, night and day, I did not stop warning each one of you with tears. [20:32] And now I entrust you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you the inheritance among all who are sanctified. [20:33] I coveted no one's silver or gold or clothing. [20:34] You yourselves know that these hands served my own needs and those of the men with me. [20:35] In every way I showed you that, working hard like this, you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' " [20:36] And when he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with all of them. [20:37] There was considerable weeping among them all, and they embraced Paul and kissed him, [20:38] grieving most of all over the word he had spoken — that they would see his face no more. And they accompanied him to the ship.

In the world it was spoken into

In this farewell address, Paul speaks to the (elders) of the Ephesian (assembly), a group of respected leaders within the community. In the Greco-Roman world, such elders were often patrons or heads of households, responsible for maintaining order and providing guidance. Paul’s emphasis on his (humility) and service would have stood in contrast to the honor-seeking behavior typical of leaders in Roman society, where status and public recognition were highly valued. His mention of teaching publicly and from house to house reflects the dual nature of early Christian gatherings—both in public spaces and private homes, which were central to community life. The reference to (overseers) underscores their role as guardians of the community’s spiritual and moral well-being, a concept familiar in both Jewish and Greco-Roman contexts. Paul’s warning about future challenges aligns with the precarious position of early Christian groups, who often faced external hostility and internal divisions.
