ACT 3:11-26

Peter Speaks in Solomonʼs Colonnade

11And while he was clinging to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the covered colonnade called Solomon's — utterly astonished. [3:12] And when Peter saw this, he answered the people: 'Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this, or why do you stare at us as though by our own power or godliness we have made this man walk? [3:13] The God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob — the God of our fathers — has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied before the face of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. [3:14] But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, [3:15] and the Pioneer of life you killed — whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses. [3:16] And on the basis of trust in his name, his name has made this man strong whom you see and know — and the trust that is through him has given him this complete wholeness before all of you. [3:17] And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance — as did also your rulers. [3:18] But God fulfilled in this way what he foretold through the mouth of all the prophets — that his Anointed One would suffer. [3:19] Repent, therefore, and turn back, for the blotting out of your sins, [3:20] so that times of refreshing may come from the face of the Lord, and that he may send the Anointed One appointed for you — Jesus — [3:21] whom heaven must receive until the times of the restoration of all things, which God spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old. [3:22] Moses said: The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet from your brothers as he raised me up. You will hear him in all things, whatever he says to you. [3:23] And it will be — every soul that does not hear that prophet will be utterly cut off from the people. [3:24] And all the prophets from Samuel and those who followed, as many as have spoken, also announced these days. [3:25] You are sons of the prophets and of the covenant God covenanted with your fathers, saying to Abraham: And in your offspring all the families of the earth will be blessed. [3:26] God, having raised up his servant, sent him first to you to bless you by turning each one of you away from your wickedness.'

In the world it was spoken into

In the first century, Solomon’s Colonnade was a prominent public space in the Temple complex, a gathering place for Jews to discuss religious matters and hear teachings. Peter’s audience, composed of 'Men Israelites,' would have understood his appeal to the 'God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob' as a direct invocation of their covenantal identity. The healing of the lame man, described as 'complete soundness' , would have been seen as a sign of divine power, evoking expectations of messianic restoration . Peter’s emphasis on Jesus as God’s 'servant' aligns with Isaiah’s 'Servant of the Lord,' a figure associated with suffering and redemption. The accusation that they 'delivered up and disowned' Jesus would have resonated deeply, as it implicated them in the rejection of a figure they now see as divinely appointed. The promise of 'times of refreshing' and restoration would have stirred eschatological hopes tied to Israel’s prophetic traditions.
