ACT 8:26-40

Philip and the Ethiopian

26An angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, 'Get up and go toward the south, to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza—this is a desert road.' [8:27] So he got up and went. And there was an Ethiopian man, a eunuch, a high official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship [8:28] and was returning, seated in his chariot, and reading the prophet Isaiah. [8:29] The Spirit said to Philip, 'Go over and join this chariot.' [8:30] So Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, 'Do you understand what you are reading?' [8:31] He replied, 'How can I, unless someone guides me?' And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. [8:32] Now the passage of Scripture that he was reading was this: 'Like a sheep led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth. [8:33] In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.' [8:34] The eunuch said to Philip, 'I ask you, about whom does the prophet say this—about himself or about someone else?' [8:35] Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture, he told him the good news about Jesus. [8:36] As they traveled along the road, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, 'Look, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?' [8:38] He ordered the chariot to stop, and both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. [8:39] When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more. He went on his way rejoicing. [8:40] But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

In the world it was spoken into

In the 1st century, Ethiopia was a distant and exotic land, often associated with wealth and mystery. The Ethiopian eunuch, described as a (potentate), held a high-ranking position in the court of Candace, a title for Ethiopian queens. Eunuchs, though often marginalized in Jewish purity laws (Deut. 23:1), were trusted officials in royal courts, managing treasuries and wielding significant influence. The eunuch’s journey to Jerusalem to worship suggests he was a God-fearer, a Gentile drawn to Judaism but not fully converted. Reading Isaiah’s prophecy in his chariot, he would have been familiar with Jewish scriptures but likely struggled to interpret their messianic implications. Philip’s encounter with him on the desert road reflects the early Christian mission’s openness to outsiders, including those excluded by traditional Jewish norms. The Spirit’s guidance to Philip underscores the divine initiative in crossing cultural and ethnic boundaries, a hallmark of the early church’s expansion.
