26For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. [3:27] For as many as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. [3:28] There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male and female — for you yourselves are all one in Christ Jesus. [3:29] If now you yourselves are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed — heirs according to the promise, heirs.
GAL 3:26-29
Sons through Faith in Christ
In the world it was spoken into
In the Greco-Roman world, identity was deeply tied to social categories: ethnicity (Jew/Greek), status (slave/free), and gender (male/female). These distinctions determined one’s rights, honor, and access to resources. For Jews, being descendants of Abraham was central to their identity, marking them as God’s chosen people. Paul’s declaration that all are 'sons of God' through faith in Christ would have been striking. In Roman law, sons held full inheritance rights, a status Paul extends to all believers, regardless of their social standing. The phrase 'you have put on Christ' evokes the image of assuming a new identity, like donning a garment that transforms one’s appearance and role. By erasing these divisions, Paul subverts the honor-shame hierarchy of the ancient world, asserting that in Christ, all share equally in the promise to Abraham. This would have been both liberating and destabilizing for a community accustomed to rigid social stratification.
