JHN 14:15-26

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15'If you love me, you will keep my commandments. [14:16] And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever— [14:17] the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he abides with you and will be in you. [14:18] I will not leave you as those utterly without protection; I am coming to you. [14:19] Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. [14:20] In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. [14:21] Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.' [14:22] Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, 'Lord, what has happened that you will reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?' [14:23] Jesus answered him, 'If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our abiding place with him. [14:24] Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me. [14:25] These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. [14:26] But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.'

In the world it was spoken into

In the 1st century, the term (paraklētos) carried legal and relational connotations, referring to an advocate or intercessor who stood by someone in a court of law or in a time of need. For Jesus’ disciples, this promise of another would have resonated deeply, as they faced uncertainty and potential persecution. The (kosmos), often understood as the created order in rebellion against God, was a familiar concept in Jewish and early Christian thought, representing the forces opposed to God’s purposes. The assurance that the Spirit of truth would abide with them (, monē) conveyed permanence and stability, contrasting with the transient nature of human relationships. The mention of not leaving them as (orphanous) evoked the vulnerability of those without familial protection, a stark reality in the honor-shame culture of the Mediterranean world. This promise would have reassured the disciples of Jesus’ ongoing presence and care, even in his physical absence.
