JHN 3:1-21

Jesus and Nicodemus

1Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. [3:2] He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher — for no one can do these signs you do unless God is with him." [3:3] Jesus answered and said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you: unless one is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God." [3:4] Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother's womb a second time and be born?" [3:5] Jesus answered, "Amen, amen, I say to you: unless one is born of water and Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. [3:6] What is born of flesh is flesh, and what is born of Spirit is spirit. [3:7] Do not be astonished that I said to you, 'You must be born from above.' [3:8] The wind blows where it wills, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes — so it is with everyone born of the Spirit." [3:9] Nicodemus answered and said to him, "How can these things be?" [3:10] Jesus answered and said to him, "You are the teacher of Israel, and you do not understand these things? [3:11] Amen, amen, I say to you: we speak of what we know and we testify of what we have seen, and you do not receive our testimony. [3:12] If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? [3:13] And no one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven — the Son of Man. [3:14] And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, [3:15] so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him. [3:16] For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [3:17] For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through him. [3:18] The one who believes in him is not judged; but the one who does not believe has already been judged, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. [3:19] And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, because their works were evil. [3:20] For everyone who does evil hates the light and does not come to the light, so that his works will not be exposed. [3:21] But the one who does the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be shown to have been done in God."
