Woes to Pharisees and Experts in the Law

37While he was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined. [11:38] The Pharisee, seeing this, was astonished that he had not first ritually immersed before the meal. [11:39] The Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, but your inside is full of greed and evil. [11:40] Fools! Did not the one who made the outside also make the inside? [11:41] But give the contents as mercy, and look — everything is clean for you. [11:42] But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and pass over judgment and the love of God. These you should have done without leaving those undone. [11:43] Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the seat of honor in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. [11:44] Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves — people walking over them do not know it." [11:45] One of the lawyers answered him, "Teacher, in saying these things you insult us too." [11:46] He said, "And woe to you lawyers! For you load people with burdens impossible to carry, and you yourselves do not touch those burdens with one of your fingers. [11:47] Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. [11:48] So you are witnesses and you approve the works of your fathers — for they killed them, and you build their tombs. [11:49] For this reason also the wisdom of God said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,' [11:50] so that the blood of all the prophets shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation — [11:51] from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I say to you, it will be required of this generation. [11:52] Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter, and those who were entering you hindered. [11:53] And when he went out from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him intensely and to question him about many things, [11:54] lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say."
