LUK 8:26-39

The Demons and the Pigs

26And they sailed down to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. [8:27] And to him, having gone out upon the land, there met him a certain man from the city who had demons, and for a long time he had not put on clothing and in a house he had not stayed, but in the tombs. [8:28] And having seen Jesus, and having cried out, he fell down before him and said with a loud voice, "What to me and to you, Jesus, Son of God the Most High? I implore you, do not torment me!" [8:29] For he was commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man; for many times it had seized him, and he was shackled with chains and in fetters, being kept — and breaking the chains he was driven by the demon into the deserts. [8:30] And Jesus questioned him, saying: "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion" — because many demons had entered into him. [8:31] And they were begging him that he would not command them to go away into the abyss. [8:32] Now there was there a herd of pigs, considerable in number, feeding on the mountain, and they begged him that he would allow them to enter into those. And he allowed them. [8:33] And the demons, having gone out from the man, entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. [8:34] And those feeding them, having seen what had happened, fled and reported it in the city and in the countryside. [8:35] And they went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out seated at the feet of Jesus, clothed and being of sound mind, and they were afraid. [8:36] And those who had seen it reported to them how the demon-possessed man had been healed. [8:37] And all the multitude of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked him to go away from them, for a great fear had seized them. And he, having embarked in the boat, returned. [8:38] And the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging him that he might be with him. But Jesus dismissed him, saying: "Return to your house and recount what God has done for you." [8:39] And he went, proclaiming throughout the whole city what Jesus had done for him.

In the world it was spoken into

In the region of the Gerasenes, a man possessed by demons lived among the tombs, a place associated with impurity and death in Jewish thought. Demons were understood as malevolent spiritual beings causing harm and chaos. The man’s condition rendered him ritually unclean , excluded from communal and religious life. His dwelling in tombs and lack of clothing further marked him as socially and spiritually marginalized. The demons’ recognition of Jesus as “Son of the Most High God” reflects a common belief in the power of divine names to control spiritual forces. The request not to be sent into the abyss reveals their fear of confinement in the underworld, a place of eternal punishment. The drowning of the pigs, unclean animals in Jewish law, symbolizes the expulsion of impurity. The man’s restoration to soundness of mind signifies a return to social and spiritual order, a profound transformation in a culture valuing communal harmony.
