MRK 6:14-29

The Beheading of John

And King Herod heard, for his name had become well known, and they were saying that John the Baptizer has been raised from the dead, and because of this the powers operate in him.

But others were saying that he is Elijah; and others were saying that he is a prophet, like one of the prophets.

But having heard, Herod was saying: "John, whom I myself beheaded — this one is risen."

For Herod himself, having sent, seized John and bound him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother, because he had married her.

For John was saying to Herod: "It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother."

And Herodias was holding it against him and was wanting to kill him, and was not able.

For Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and he was keeping him safe; and having heard him, he was perplexed about many things, yet he was hearing him gladly.

And an opportune day came when Herod, on his birthday, made a banquet for his nobles and the military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.

And the daughter of her, Herodias, having come in and danced, pleased Herod and those reclining with him. The king said to the girl: "Ask me whatever you wish, and I will give it to you."

And he swore to her: "Whatever you ask me, I will give to you, up to half of my kingdom."

And having gone out, she said to her mother: "What shall I ask?" And she said: "The head of John the Baptizer."

And having come in immediately with haste to the king, she asked, saying: "I want that you give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist."

And the king, becoming encompassingly sorrowful, on account of the oaths and those reclining with him did not want to refuse her.

And immediately the king, having sent an executioner, ordered to bring his head. And having gone, he beheaded him in the prison,

and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

And his disciples, having heard, came and took his corpse and laid it in a tomb.

In the world it was spoken into

In the 1st-century Herodian court, honor and shame were central to political survival. Herod Antipas, tetrarch of Galilee and Perea, ruled as a client king under Roman authority, maintaining power through alliances and public displays of loyalty. John the Baptist’s condemnation of Herod’s marriage to Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, struck at the heart of Herod’s honor. In Jewish law, such a union was scandalous, violating Levitical prohibitions. Herodias, likely motivated by her own social standing, pressured Herod to silence John. Herod’s imprisonment of John reflects a cautious attempt to appease both his wife and the populace, who revered John as a prophet. The banquet scene, a typical display of Roman patronage and excess, underscores Herod’s vulnerability to public opinion. His oath, sworn before guests, bound him by the honor-shame code, forcing him to execute John despite his personal reluctance. This event highlights the tension between Roman political pragmatism and Jewish prophetic critique in Herod’s court.
