PHP 1:3-11

Thanksgiving and Prayer

3I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

4always in my every petition on behalf of all of you, making the petition with joy,

5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now —

6having been persuaded of this very thing: that the one who began a good work in you will bring it to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

7It is right for me to think this of all of you, because I have you in my heart — both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel — as all of you are co-partakers of grace with me.

8For God is my witness how I long for all of you with the deep affections of Christ Jesus.

9And this I pray: that your love may abound still more and more in full knowledge and all perception,

10so that you may distinguish what is excellent, so that you may be pure and without offense until the day of Christ,

11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ — to the glory and praise of God.

In the world it was spoken into

In Philippi, a Roman colony with strong Greco-Roman civic values, Paul’s letter would resonate with listeners familiar with patronage and communal bonds. The term (partnership) carried weight in both Roman and Jewish contexts, signifying a shared investment in a common cause—here, the gospel. Roman patronage systems emphasized reciprocal loyalty, and Paul’s gratitude reflects this ethos, acknowledging their ongoing support. The phrase (having been persuaded) conveys Paul’s settled confidence, rooted in divine faithfulness, a concept familiar to Jewish listeners who trusted in God’s covenant promises. The mention of (heart) evokes deep emotional connection, a term used in Greco-Roman literature to describe familial or intimate affection. Paul’s prayer for their discernment aligns with Stoic ideals of moral excellence, while his focus on righteousness through Christ Jesus reflects Jewish eschatological hope. The Philippians, a mixed community of Jews and Gentiles, would hear this as both a reaffirmation of their shared mission and a call to deepen their communal and spiritual bonds.
